John E. Chesley, 86 of Sioux City passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at a local care facility after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Tess Panamarow will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. and a prayer service at 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

John was born June 27, 1929 in Sloan, IA; he was the son of Thomas and Rose (Woods) Chesley. His family moved to Sioux City when he was 14 years old. He graduated from Central High School and then served honorably in the U.S. Army. John married Mary Ann Nelson October 16, 1953 in Sioux City. They have been married for over 62 years. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. John worked for Nutra-Flo and Aalfs Manufacturing before retiring from the City of Sioux City in 1993. In the early days, he bowled and played softball. He coached Little League and never lost his love for baseball or golf. Most recently, John could be seen about town having coffee with friends.

Survivors include his wife: Mary Ann of Sioux City; his daughter: Connie (Mike ) Sunderman of Sioux City, 2 sons: Jay (Tammy) Chesley of Sioux Falls, SD, Roger (Linda) Chesley of Lenexa, KS; 6 grandchildren: Jill (Brad) Jurgens, Tim (Sarah) Sunderman, Jordan (Kelly) Chesley, Jesse (Rachel)Chesley, Krista (Mike) Otto, Corey Chesley; He was papa “great” to Joey and Evelyn Jurgens, Kinnick and Kennedy Sunderman, Rowan and Anderson Chesley.

Pallbearers will be his beloved grandchildren and their spouses.

John was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Delores Chesley and Gloria Pueppke and an infant son, Paul. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
