Kelly R. Kruithoff, 57, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 6 in Sioux City. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015 at Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City with Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Per Mr. Kruithoff’s request, there will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
Kelly R. Kruithoff was born Oct. 25, 1958 in Sioux City, the son of Andrew and Alice (Scheel) Kruithoff. He was raised in Riverside and attended schools there. He graduated from West High School in 1977 and Morningside College in 1981.
He started working at the Leader-Courier newspaper in Elk Point in 1980, his senior year in college. In 1997, he was named editor of the paper. Starting in 2005, he also reported for the Dakota Dunes/North Sioux City Times. Cancer forced his early retirement in 2014.
Over the years, he won over 50 individual awards from the South Dakota Newspaper Association for his writing, photos and editorials.
He is survived by a number of cousins and good friends, Bruce and Susan Odson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kim.
