Richard N Krommenhoek

d. November 13, 2015

Richard N. "Dick" Krommenhoek, 78, of Sioux City passed away at his residence on Friday, November 13, 2015, after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary service led by the Knights of Columbus at 4:00 P.M., and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Dick was born April 21, 1937 in Sioux City, Ia., to Nick and Ethel (Johnson) Krommenhoek, the oldest of five children. He grew up in Sioux City, for the most part, and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He was involved in football, baseball, basketball and track while in school, and was signed to a contract with the San Francisco Giants organization. He served in the Air National Guard for a short time. Dick married Maryann C. Fischer on July 30, 1960, in Elk Point, S.D., and they had six children. When he was younger he worked at various careers, including landscape design, a machinist for Boeing Co. in Seattle, and a salesman for Pitney Bowes in Sioux City. He began his primary career, as a kitchen and bath designer, in the late 1970s, which he continued until he passed away. It was a perfect position, as he loved talking with people as much as he enjoyed drawing and creating. He had his own business, Kitchens by Krommenhoek, in the early 1980s, but most recently was employed with Modern Kitchen Design in Sioux City. Dick was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where served as a lector, a Eucharist Minister and choir member. Dick was a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. Dick was a bigger than life character - strong, smart, independent. He had a John Wayne-like presence. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, cheered for the Chicago Cubs, and enjoyed playing golf. He also loved to attend his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He coached both Little League baseball and youth basketball when his kids were young, and was proud of his involvement with building up Pulaski Park to what it is today. Dick loved jokes, but never told one without laughing in the middle of it. There were several jokes we never did hear the punch line for. Left to remember him are sons, Ric (Sarah) of Sioux City, Chris (Barbara) of Tulsa, Okla., Brett of Davenport, Iowa, daughters, Colleen (Brad) Stolpe of Obert, Ne., and Megan (Michael) Bracht of Sioux City; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; a brother, Darrell of Sioux City and a sister, Janet Ream of Dothan, Al.. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Maryann; a daughter, Courtney Ann; a brother, Tom; a sister, Judy; and a grand-daughter, Elizabeth. The family would like to thank Hospice of Siouxland for their care and support.
