Florence M. Thorpe, 102 of Sioux City passed away on Monday, October 12, 2015 at a local care facility after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Rev. Scott Squires will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 12:00 until 1:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Florence was born August 2, 1913 in Sanborn, IA; she was the daughter of Ira and Esther (Tifft) Long. She attended school in Sanborn, IA and graduated from Sanborn High School. Florence attended nurses training at the Methodist School of Nursing in Sioux City and graduated in 1937. Florence married Forrest W. Thorpe May 24, 1936 in Marshall, MN. They owned and operated the Thorpe Café in Ruthven, IA for 8 years. They moved to Sioux City and Florence was a nurse at the Methodist Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Mercy Medical Center and then Marian Health Center. Florence was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church and the Women of the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed fishing with her husband Forrest and reading. Survivors include her son: James Thorpe of Lebanon, MO, a granddaughter: Jamie Wiser and her husband William and their children, Lucas and Aubrey all of St. Louis, MO; a former daughter in law: Virginia Thorpe of Imperial, MO. Florence is also survived by a longtime special friend, Ruth Lebowich and her husband Steven Palash and their dog Gizmo of Sioux City and nieces and nephews. Florence was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Forrest. Pallbearers will be Lucas Thorpe, William Wiser and Steven Palash, and Larry Bourassa, Nellie Hadley, and Gene Jackson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Crescent Park United Methodist Church or Care Initiatives Hospice.
