Shirley A. Winfrey, 93 of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at a local Sioux City Hospital. Shirley was born on July 29, 1921 in Valley Falls, Kansas to Ryland E. and Beatrice (Lee) Jackson. She married Victor H. Winfrey on September 13, 1938 in Valley Falls. Shirley was a homemaker, taking pride in raising her children. The family moved from Valley Falls, to Casper, Wyoming and eventually to Sioux City in 1943. She has been active in numerous organizations, including Ideka Club, Young Matrons Art Club, Margaret Thompson Club, the NAACP local chapter, and the Order of Eastern Star. Shirley was also an active member of Malone AME Church in Sioux City where she served on the Trustee Board, and was a choir member. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, growing vegetables, canning and preserving. Shirley was an exceptional cook, particularly her homemade macaroni and cheese, homemade buttermilk brownies, and cookie cutter sandwiches made for special celebrations. Family and friends were extremely important to Shirley, and she enjoyed quality of time with all of her family. Shirley is survived by her son George Winfrey of Overland Park, KS, daughter Shirley Hodges of South Sioux City; brother Vernon Jackson of Oakland, CA; seven grandchildren Daffinie, Victoria, Kim, Alisa, Jimmy, Porcha, and Sheri; six great-grandchildren Laysha, Tierra, Kavita, Lee Jr., Stephanie, and Stephan; and three great-great-grandchildren Tyler, Taylor, and Jaylon. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Victor in 1990, stepmother Faye, son James Winfrey, sisters Florence Winfrey and Rosie Jackson, grandson Jason Winfrey.
