Dr. Leslie L. Hershkowitz, M.D. SIOUX CITY | Dr. Leslie L. Hershkowitz, M.D., 61, wife of Dr. Bill Cohen, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at a local hospital. Services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rabbi Maximo Shechet officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Independent Farane Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Leslie was born October 20, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of Irving and Grace Fleidermause Hershkowitz. She grew up in Brooklyn where she did her undergraduate studies at Brooklyn College. She worked on her master's degree at the University of Buffalo. Leslie earned her Doctor of Medicine in 1980 from Far Eastern University College of Medicine (Manila, Philippines). Her residency training included New York University, Booth Memorial Hospital Center (Queens, NY); Post Graduate Clerkship, 1981; State Univeristy of New York, Long Island College Hospital Medical Internship, 1982; UMDMJ, Jersey Shore Medical Center (Neptune, NJ); Internal Medicine Residency, 1984; Deborah Heart and Lung Center (Browns Mills, NJ); and Cardiology Fellowship, 1984-1986. On March 27, 1982 she married Dr. William E. Cohen in Brooklyn, NY. Leslie started in private practice in New Jersey then continued in Atlantic and Walton, Georgia. In 1994 she relocated to Sioux City where she was in private practice with Cardiovascular Associates. From 2006 until 2008 she was an instructor at the University of South Dakota. Leslie was an associate clinical professor of cardiology at the University of Nebraska in Omaha from 2009 until 2013. She is certified by The American Board of Internal Medicine for both Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease and a fellow of the American College of Cardiologists. Leslie was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom and United Orthodox Synagogue. As an avid artist, she loved painting, especially watercolors. She also enjoyed quilting and was very involved with Junior League. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Bill Cohen; three daughters, Jaime Anne Cohen of Chicago, IL, Lindsay Dana Cohen of Iowa City, IA and Ali Rae Cohen of Iowa City, IA; and a sister, Francine Hershkowitz of New York City. She was preceded in death by her parents. Pallbearers will be Dr. Don Swift, Dan Lederman, Dr. Glenn Cohen, Don Cohen, Lewis Weinberg, and Steve Huff. Leslie suffered from a rare and aggressive cancer, which at this point in time has no cure and few treatments. In honor of her fight and passing we would like to raise money for women fighting a similar battle. 80% of the funds will go to these special women and the remaining funds will help to cover end of life care and funeral costs.
