Bernadette A. Day, 91, of Newcastle, NE passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at a Sioux City hospital surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle with Father Andrew Sohm officiating. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-7:30 P.M. with a Wake and Rosary Service at 7:30 P.M. Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Parish Hall in Newcastle. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Newcastle. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Bernadette and her identical twin sister, Bernadine, were born June 27, 1924 in rural Ponca to Tom and Nora (Sullivan) Shanahan. Bernadette graduated from Ponca High School in 1942 and then attended Wayne State College, where she earned her teaching degree. She taught in the rural Ponca area in numerous schools. Bernadette and Paul Day were joined in matrimony at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca on July 14, 1953. There were blessed with 5 children. Together they farmed and raised livestock in rural Newcastle. Bernadette loved farm life and all that it entailed. Her two greatest joys were being a farmer's wife and raising her family. In 1989, Bernadette moved into Newcastle. Bernadette was a longtime member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Altar Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her daughters: Peggy (Mark) Gregg of Ponca, NE and Bonnie Bevelhymer of Ponca, NE and fiancé Terry Rohan; daughter in law Susie Day of Newcastle, NE; sister Monica Richards of Ponca, NE, sister in laws Shirley Shanahan of Ventura, CA and Ilona Day of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, three sons: Larry, Gene, and Roger Day, her parents, brother Michael Shanahan, twin sister Bernadine Finnegan, and two son in laws: Kevin McGill and Steve Bevelhymer.
