Robert H. "Bob" Bridgett

March 1, 1930 — June 16, 2015

Robert H. "Bob" Bridgett, 85 of Sioux City, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at a Sioux City hospital. A Memorial Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2015 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Reverend Sheryl K. Ashley as officiant. A private graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery will be at a later date. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Bob was born March 1, 1930 in Sioux City to James A. and Gladys (Tague) Bridgett. He attended schools in Sioux City, graduating from Leeds High School in 1948. Bob went to work for Iowa Public Service Company as a bookkeeper after graduation. He met his future wife, Vivian Merriman while working at the public service company. They were married in 1949. Bob was a member of the 174th Air Guard and was activated during the Korean Conflict. After being stationed in Bangor, Maine and attending training in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Bob was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Upon returning to Sioux City, he went to work for Armours as an industrial engineer until their closing, then worked for Postal Finance as head of the mail and advertising departments. Bob joined the Sioux City Fire Department and served 30 very satisfying years, retiring as Captain. During his days off from the department, Bob built eleven houses and did a lot of remodeling. He enjoyed any kind of woodworking, especially furniture. He built the family home on an acreage outside of Hinton, Iowa and lived there for 28 years, moving back to Sioux City several years ago. He had stated many times he enjoyed his life as it was, and didn't think he would change anything if he could do it over again. Bob is survived by his wife Vivian of Sioux City; two children Cathy (Carey) Anderson and Ron (Ellen) Bridgett; three grandsons Brad (Annalissa) Anderson, Andrew (Elizabeth) Sample, and Nick Sample; nine great-grandchildren; sister Phyllis VanMeter; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don, sister Maxine, grandson Rodney Bridgett, and great-grandson Bailey Sample.
