Melvin Olson

Melvin H. Olson, 89, of Sioux City passed away Monday June 8, 2015 at a Sioux City Nursing home. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday June 12, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Craig Collison officiating. Visitation will be Thursday June 11, 2015 from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 till 8 p.m. and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Church. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Melvin was born May 15, 1926 in Sioux City, the son of Arthur and Vida (Stockwell) Olson. He attended Sioux City Schools and in 1944 enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving on the Destroyers USS Cunningham and the USS Oklahoma City. He served both in World War II and the Korean War. In 2008 he was a participant in the Honor Flight program to honor WWII veterans. After his service, he worked at the Sioux City Foundry. May of 1953 he joined the U.S. Postal Service and worked as a postman until his retirement in January of 1984. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Bernard on May 20, 1947 in Sioux City at Epiphany Cathedral Catholic Church. Melvin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 60 years, was a member of the Sioux City Elks 112 for 20 years, American Legion Post 492, Retired Letter Carriers Group, served as Commadore at the Missouri River Boat Club and IPS Harbor Club. Melvin enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, visiting friends and family. Survivors include three sons; Dennis and wife Bobbi of Mount Sterling KY, Daniel and his wife Darlene of McCook Lake, SD and Russell and his wife Kim of Sgt. Bluff, IA; nine grandchildren: Jada (Judd) Goodrich, Michael (Kimberly), Rebecca (Ty) Corneau, Bradley (Edarra, Jennifer (Billy) Maliszewski, Nichole (Brandon) Petersen, Greg, David (Mindy) Schuetz and Jon (Erin) Schuetz and 15 great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Abby, Elizabeth, Emily, Faith, Paige, Willow, Hudson, Lawson, Landon, Clayton, Alexander, Najika, Rylie and Emerson. He is also survived by his two sisters, Shirley Anderson and Gwendolyn Plantz both of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years his parents and two brothers: Arthur Jr. and his twin Milton and one sister as an infant. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who loved camping, boating and football. In Lieu of flowers the family request a donation be made to Hospice of Siouxland
