George Thorpe Clark

George Thorpe Clark, 91, of Sioux City passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Emeritus Senior Living in Sioux City. A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. A masonic service will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. by the Tyrian Lodge #508 with a prayer service to follow at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Private burial of his cremains will be in the Logan Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com George was born on September 11, 1923 in Sioux City to Wilson and Mae (Thorpe) Clark. He graduated from Central High School in 1941 and received further education at the Wentworth Military Academy, where he was awarded membership in the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship fraternity, for one year to prepare for the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in June of 1945 (Class of 1946). He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served aboard the USS Atlanta (CL-104). George also served as an Admirals Aid on the USS Wisconsin. He qualified for OD Underway, Registered Publications Officer, and Acting Communications Office. He resigned November 1947. He was united in marriage to Joann Emmert on September 25, 1948 in Omaha, NE. George was the third generation Owner/President of Thorpe & Company Jewelers Inc. He earned the title of Certified Gemologist, American Gem Society, and is listed in the "Who's Who In American Jewelers". George retired from the company in 1988. He was a member of Sioux City Rotary, and Sioux City Country Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Bank, Sioux City Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Home of Sioux City, and the Sioux City Museum Foundation. He is the Past President of the Greater Siouxland Merchandising Council and the Sioux City Auditorium Board. He was also a lifelong member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church having sung in the boys' choir and served on the Vestry. George was also a very active in various Masonic organizations including, Past Master Tyrian Lodge 1960, #508 A.F. & A.M., Past Illustrations Master, Sioux City Lodge of Perfection. In 1999 he was raised to the level of 33 degree in the Sioux City Scottish Rite Valley, York Rite Chapter, Council and Knights Templar, member of ABU BEKR Shrine, was part of the Flying Fez Unit, Past Director of the Royal Jesters Ct. #124, and was active for many years in the Scottish Rite Masonic play "The Traitor". In his free time he enjoyed golfing, with a proficiency in needlework, and productiveness as a flower gardener. He spent his summers visiting their home in Okoboji enjoying golf and some fishing. He spent his winters making trips to Vanderbilt Beach in Naples, FL. He is survived by his wife Joann Clark of Sioux City; daughter Margie (Bob) Clark-Horgan of Omaha, NE; son Wilson "Rusty" (Karen) Clark of Sioux City; grandchildren Clark (Ashley) Horgan of Omaha; Julie (Nick) Horgan-Wurth of Omaha; Corey Clark of Denver; and Katie (Stephen) Clark-Shaw of Wichita; great grandchildren Molly and Will Horgan of Omaha; sister Molly Graning of Dallas, TX; and a nephew Gary Graning of San Antonio, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in law Gordon Graning and a niece, Karen Graning-Sipes of Dallas. Memorials may be directed to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City or to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospitals.
