Jerry L. Strand, 83, of Sioux City passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Prairie Estate Healthcare Community in Elk Point, South Dakota, with his family by his side. Abiding by his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with Reverend Roger Madden officiating. Inurnment at the Elk Point Cemetery will follow. Visitation, with family present, will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Jerry was born in Sioux City on December 6, 1931, to S. Leonard and Daisy (Phillips) Strand. He received his education in the Sioux City Public Schools, graduating from Central High School. Jerry married DeEtte Folsom on November 29, 1950, in Sioux City. He worked for Armour Meat Packing before starting his career with the Sioux City Fire Department in 1960. Jerry served as a firefighter for thirty years before retiring in 1990. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and also followed NFL football and NASCAR racing. During his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting. For many years, Jerry and his family took yearly trips to Lake Miltona, near Alexandria, Minnesota, and gathered each February for family reunions in Las Vegas. Jerry and his wife were longtime members of the Sioux City Eagles Club. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed 61 years of marriage to DeEtte before she passed away in December 2011. Jerry is survived by his four children, Jerry "J.R." (Mary) Strand of Missoula, Montana, Judy Jansen of Sioux City, Lori Foster of Sioux City, and Leonard (Christine) Strand of Sioux City; along with 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife DeEtte, and sister Rita Miller.
