John J. Hollenbeck, age 85, of Salix, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015, at a Sioux City hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM, on Friday, April 10, 2015, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with Pastor Catie Newman, officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is in charge of arrangements. John Junior Hollenbeck, was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on May 3, 1929, to John Charles and Della May (McVey) Hollenbeck. He was raised in Salix and attended school in Sergeant Bluff. John then served his country during the Korean War with U.S. Air Force. He was a lifetime farmer, starting in 1947 and retiring in 1992. On September 2, 1990, John was united in marriage with Mary Cashwell at Bridgeville, Delaware. John was a member of the Salix Farmers Coop and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He enjoyed fishing, going to auctions, and visiting with friends over coffee. His true passion was farming the family farm, buying and selling cattle till his last days. John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mary Hollenbeck of Salix; a daughter Jill Demaers and husband Gerald of San Luis Obispo, California; two stepchildren Teresa Murray of California and Andy Murray, Jr. and wife Lea of Iowa; a grandson Nick Murray; two nieces Julie and Debbie and a nephew John. He was preceded in death by his son John Charles and a sister Jackie Simpson and her husband Tony.
