Roger Smith

April 1, 1954 — March 30, 2015

Roger Smith, age 60, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 30, 2015, at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City. Visitation will be Friday, April 3, 2015, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel where the family will be present from 5 PM to 8 PM and a Vigil Service will be held at 6 PM. Interment will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery at LeMars. Roger Morse Smith was born on April 1, 1954 in Onawa, Iowa to Ernest Morse and Pauline (Hall) Smith. He grew up on the farm near Onawa and graduated from West Monona High School and Iowa State University. He started his work career after college at Metz Baking Co. in Sioux City and worked there for 26 years until the Sioux City corporate office closed. He also worked for Bekins Logistics, Jacobson, and First Administrators. Roger married Mary Puhl on September 1, 1984 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, in Struble, Iowa. Roger was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was active as a cantor, lector, Eucharistic minister and former member of the Sacred Heart school board. For the past three years he has served as the Grand Knight for the Sacred Heart chapter Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed family activities, especially supporting his children's activities. He also enjoyed cheering on his Cyclones. He had the gift of being able to talk to anyone. It was not uncommon to find him sharing stories with new people and making them laugh. Survivors include his wife, Mary, Sioux City; son Alex, Raleigh, NC; daughter Teresa, Sioux City; and son Daniel, Ames. Sisters: Shirley (Kent) McAdon, Adel, Iowa and Phyllis (Verne) Olson, Overland Park, KS; a brother, Ernie (Lyla) Smith, Marysville, WA, and brother-in-law Rick Ignatowski, Arvada, CO and several nieces and nephews. Those preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Judy Ignatowski'.
