Lawrence A. "Larry" Nelson, Sr., 78 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father David A. Hemann as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2015 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com Larry was born on June 19, 1936 in Yankton, South Dakota to Chester and Marie (Madsen) Nelson. He was raised in rural Mission Hills, South Dakota by Archie and Marie Hofferman. Larry graduated from Yankton High School and continued his education at Yankton College focusing on Accounting. He married DeNelda "Dee" Schieffer on April 18, 1956 in Vermillion, South Dakota. Larry farmed for years in Hurley, South Dakota before joining Pepsi Cola as a salesman. He finished his career in sales working for Frito Lay. Larry stayed busy following his retirement working maintenance for Siouxland Council of Aging in Sioux City. Larry enjoyed golfing, bowling, camping, fishing, square-dancing, and could often be found searching for antiques at local auctions if he wasn't tending to his yard. Family was Larry's greatest passion. He was always willing to lend a helping hand with cars, home projects, etc. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a member of the Eagle's Club. Larry is survived by his daughter Vickie Nelson of Sioux City; son Larry Nelson, Jr. of Dakota Dunes, SD and his daughter Pam Nelson of Sioux City; son Randy (Mickey) Nelson of Sioux City and their children Eric Nelson of Shawnee Mission, KS, Jim (Donyell) Nelson of Sioux City, Andrew (Maddy) Nelson of Sioux City, and Melissa (Jeff) Cartmill of Shawnee Mission, KS; son Rick (Michelle) Nelson of Gunnison, CO and their children Tyler Nelson and his fiancé Natalie Taylor of Denver, CO, Spencer Nelson and his fiancé Mary Matthews of Washington, D.C., and Savannah Nelson of Gunnison, CO; and great-grandchildren Emme, James, Tristan, Oliver and Baby Cartmill due in September. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dee in 2011, sister Mary Ann Sivertson, daughter-in-law Tamara Nelson and grandson Joseph. The family would like to thank Dr Gurbuz and the ICU Nurses at Mercy Medical Center that took excellent care of Larry.
