Lt. Col. John P. Meier, Retired U. S. Army, age 83 of Sioux City passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at his residence after a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Rev. Merrill Muller will officiate. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Monday with a prayerservice at 7:00 P.M. Monday followed by a masonic service by the Triangle Lodge all at the funeral home. John was born February 3, 1932 in Sioux City, IA; he was the son of Lester and Bertha (Pierce) Holt. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Leeds High School where he lettered in football all for 4 years. John went on to play football and attended Iowa State University and Westmar College. He was drafted late in 1951 to the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. John married Patricia "Trish" Coon February 1, 1952 in Sioux City. His 3 greatest loves in his life were his wife, his children and the U.S. Army. Following the Korean Conflict, John continued to serve in the U. S. Army Reserves and was Commanding Officer for many years, he retired in 1980. He also worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T for over 30 years. John was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, The Triangle Masonic Lodge # 643 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, The Sioux City Scottish Rite, Abu Bekr Shrine Campers Unit and Vintage Wheels. John was a life long and very committed Minnesota Vikings fan and had coached youth football for many years. Survivors include his wife Patricia of Sioux City; 3 children: Debra McAtee (Timothy) of Storm Lake, IA, Kim Meier (Gina) of South Sioux City, NE, Penny Nash (Don "Red" Nash) of Sioux City; a brother: Lester "Bud" Holt (Virginia) of Duluth, MN, a sister: Phyllis "P.J." Kruse of LeMars, IA; 9 grandchildren: Aaron McAtee, Melissa McAtee, Justin McAtee (Erica), Taylor Meier, Amanda Bugbee (Steven), Justin Jasa, Jesse Grell, John Nash and his significant other Wendy LaCroix, Kelly Nash and her fiancé Ron Williams; 15 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and 3 sisters. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials in John's name to Shrine Children's Hospital or Hospice of Siouxland.
