LeRoy E. Sorensen

LeRoy Eldon Sorensen, 80, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015. Services will be on Saturday, February 7th at 10:30 AM. at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Rev. David Halaas officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 P. M. Friday with the family present 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Feb. 6th, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. He was born Sept. 16, 1934 in Freeman, SD the son of Leonard C. & Agnes (Helgager) Sorensen. He attended country school for eight years and then graduated from Hurley High School. LeRoy attended College at Springfield, South Dakota in the automotive dept for one year. He worked in a garage in Centerfield, South Dakota until volunteering for the Army. He took his basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas. LeRoy married Lois Christensen on February 12, 1955 at Fort Bliss. In March of 1955 LeRoy was assigned to Fort Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska where Lois joined him. Their daughter Kathy was born there. When LeRoy was discharged from the Army the family moved to Springfield, South Dakota where LeRoy went back to school. In 1957 they moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where LeRoy was employed at Graham Tire Co. In 1958 LeRoy joined the Sioux Falls Police Dept. where he was the Hit & Run Officer until 1969. They moved to Sioux City where he was employed with State Auto Insurance until 1976 when he was employed by Joe Morton Insurance (Great West Casualty) as a claims adjuster until 1998 when he retired. He enjoyed this job travelling the whole country in the company airplanes. LeRoy retired from Great West in 1998. They spent part of the winter months in Casa Grande, AZ. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lois of Sioux City; children, Kathy (Larry) Shoop of Naples, FL, Cheryl Smith of Forest Grove Oregon, Loren (Krista) Sorensen of Omaha, NE, Doug (Lillie) Sorensen of Windemere, FL and Cindy Longnecker of Ankeny, I.: seven grandchildren: Aaron (Abby) Sorensen of St. Joe, Mo, Sarah (Trevor) Labarge of Forest Grove, OR., Joshua and Mathew Sorensen of Windemere, FL, Elizabeth and Michael Longnecker of Ankeny, IA, and Boone Sorensen of Omaha, NE; Great-grandchildren; Grant and Owen of St. Joe, MO; step grandchildren; Ryan Shoop of Avon Lake and Reed (Heather) Shoop of Norwalk, OH, Meredith Rodney and Kaylee Podany of Omaha, NE. Step great-grandchildren; Aiden and Asher Shoop of Avon Lake, OH and Cameron and Cohen of Norwalk, OH; and his sister, Mary Ann (Pete) Lintala of Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, The Children's Food Pantry or to the family to distribute.
