Carole was born the daughter of William Carroll and Ellen Isabelle (Harder) Block on July 8, 1917 in Dallas, Tripp County, South Dakota. She graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in 1935 and was her class salutatorian. After graduation she attended Comptometer school. Carole married David Winkel on August 26, 1939 at St. Jean Baptiste Catholic Church in Sioux City. She worked for Roberts Dairy, St. Joseph Hospital, a local physician's practice, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Carole found happiness in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She did anything she could for them; cooking for them, attending their activities, babysitting, and travelling to their homes with her late husband. Most of all she enjoyed family dinners, which usually included her homemade chicken and noodles and cinnamon rolls. In her spare time she liked crossword puzzles, playing solitaire and flower gardening. She also stayed busy with volunteer work at the Senior Center, Ronald McDonald House, Cathedral of the Epiphany church office, Marian Center gift shop, and in weekly Eucharistic adoration at the Divine Mercy Chapel at Trinity Heights. Carole was a member of Cathedral of the Epiphany for the past 43 years and previously a member of St. Boniface and St. Jean. Carole was able to spend her later years at home under the personal and loving care of her daughter, Dianne. Carole's family will be forever grateful. Carole is survived by her children, David Winkel of Sioux City, Dianne Winkel of Sioux City, Daniel (Carolyn) Winkel of Omaha, Ellen (Toli) Polewik of Ft. Dodge, Carole Anne (David) Harmon of Cairo, Nebraska, Steve (Nancy) Winkel of Overland Park, Kansas, Mark (Dawn) Winkel of Sioux City, and Susan (Doug) Boden of Sioux City; one daughter-in-law, Judy Winkel of Sioux City; 27 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David, in 1993; and one son, Dick, in March, 2014; two sisters, Willamina Bisbee and Katherine Wolpert; one grandson, Jeffrey Winkel; and one daughter-in-law, Paula Winkel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cathedral of the Epiphany or Queen of Peace.
