Karen Mary Smith, 75, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, October 31, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday, November 3, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. Catholic Daughters of America will have a rosary at 4:30 pm. The family will be present from 6 to 8 P.M. and a Vigil service at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Online condolences can be directed to meyerbroschapels.com. Karen was born in Remsen, Iowa on the family farm on July 12, 1939, the daughter of Edward and Helen (Tentinger) Ritz. She graduated from Heelan High School in 1958. Karen married Dennis F Smith on August 6, 1960 in Sioux City, Iowa and just recently celebrated their 54th anniversary. Karen was a homemaker and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to everyone who knew her. She worked for the hot lunch program at St. Boniface School for many years and babysat and provided daycare for her grandchildren every chance she could. Karen enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, gardening and most of all spending time with her family and grandchildren. She loved vacationing and fishing with her husband and family in Minnesota and was fortunate to spend the last 20 plus summers vacationing at their cabin in Bayside Resort on Leech Lake, Minnesota. Karen was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church for over 50 years, the Catholic Daughters of America and a Eucharistic Minister. Karen is survived by her husband, Dennis F Smith of Sioux City; five children, Kevin (Donna) Smith of Sioux City, Kyle Smith and special friend (Dawn Bratvold) of Sioux City, Denise (Lee) Schmid of Kingsley, Iowa, Darin (Camille) Smith of Goodyear, Arizona and Kurt Smith of Sioux City; mother, Helen Ritz of Sioux City; three siblings, Larry (Ellen) Ritz of Merrill, Iowa, Margy (Bob) Huewe of Walker, Minnesota and Ronn (Dianne) Ritz of Ames, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Ronald C (Karen) Smith of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren, Korey Smith, Kelsey Smith, Sami Smith, Abby Smith, Anna Schmid, Bailey Smith, Jena Schmid, Kara Schmid, Camden Smith, Damon Schmid and Kaisland Trachselsmith. She was preceded in death by her father and two sisters in infancy.
