Douglas Warren Swanson, 71 of Sioux City passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014 at his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Rev. Tim Bonney will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Doug was born July 25. 1943 in Cherokee, IA; he was the son of Melvin and Winifred (Prunty) Swanson. Doug grew up in Sutherland, IA and graduated from Calumet High School in 1962 and was an All State basketball player his junior and senior years. He graduated from Morningside College in 1966. Doug married Carol Jean Baker February 15, 1964 in Sioux City she passed away on January 17, 2014 in Sioux City. Doug worked at Morey's and Raymond's Clothing Store during college and then taught and coached basketball and football at West Junior High. In 1976 Doug went to work for New York Life and in 1983 he began working at E.F. Hutton. He became an independent agent and financial advisor and formed the Swanson Group LLC in 1997. Doug was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Morningside Masonic Lodge # 615 A.F. & A.M. and the White Horse Mounted Patrol. Survivors included 3 sons and their families: Stan Swanson and his wife Lisa and their children Andrew and Lauren of Glendale, AZ, Steve Swanson and his fiancé Marlene Smith and his daughter and husband Paxton and Troy Cutler and their son Owen Cutler , Steve's other daughter Lexis and her husband Richard Morgan, Marlene's daughter (a step daughter) Kristian Smith all of Sioux City, Scott Swanson and his wife Nancy and their children Sydney and Noah of Phoenix, AZ; 3 brothers: Norman Swanson and his wife Mary of Hartley, IA, Gail Swanson and his wife Grace of Sutherland, IA, Lyle Swanson and his wife Donna of Elgin, IL; 1 sister: Wanda Blair of Sutherland, IA. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, and 2 brothers Rodney and Neal.
