SIOUX CITY | Hiram Oliver Miller, 87, of Sioux City died Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at home after a brief illness. Services will be 7 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Graveside services with military honors will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Hiram was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Springs, East Hampton, N.Y., the son of Louis I. and Florence M. (Lynch) Miller. He grew up and attended schools in the Hamptons. For a short time he worked as a farmhand to help support his family. Hiram served with the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944 until 1946 and was stationed in Greenland. He met his future wife, LaVonne L. Abbott, at the Air Base in Sioux City. They married July 9, 1950, at Little Brown Church in the Vale. She died July 31, 2004, in Sioux City. Hiram worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a conductor from 1953 until his retirement on Oct. 11, 1988. The couple had a summer home at Big Horn Bay Resort on Lake Ida by Alexandria, Minn., where he spent 14 years of fishing and enjoying family and friends. Some of his longtime railroad friends also had places at the same resort. Survivors include a daughter, Debra (Don) Jorgensen of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Stephanie (Justin) Walker; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Marie Walker and Dax Easton Walker, all of Sioux City; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters, Gertrude and Minnie. The family extends a special thank you to Sandra Phelps, and to Hospice of Siouxland for the wonderful care provided for Hiram.
