Joyce I. Vastine, 84 of Sioux City, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Countryside Senior Living. A Memorial Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 21, 2014 at St. James United Methodist Church with Reverend Ryan Christenson officiating. Visitation, with the family present, will be one hour prior to the service at the church, and during the lunch that will follow. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Joyce was born on August 15, 1930 in Sioux City to Milton and Lola (Roberts) Kreamer. She graduated from East High School with the Class of 1948 before receiving her nursing education at St. Luke's Nursing School. Joyce earned her Nursing Degree in 1951. She married Leo Vastine on July 14, 1951 in Sioux City. Joyce was a stay-at-home mother for years before joining the workforce in a hospital setting using her nursing degree. She worked for Doctors Wainwright and Harry Robison beginning in 1968 and continued for Dr. Bryce Robison until Joyce's retirement in 1992. Joyce was a lifelong member of St. James United Methodist Church, and was active in several church related groups. She enjoyed golfing, was a member of the Red Hats Society, and traveled for leisure following her retirement. Joyce had a love for animals, especially dogs, but found her greatest joy in family and calling Sioux City her home. Joyce is survived by her son Steve Vastine of Sioux City and daughter Julie (Bud) Cooper of Phoenix, AZ; sister Gloria Fischer of Sioux Center, IA; grandchildren Chad Smith, Marta Kraft, Michael Smith, Jamie Tomjum, Kenneth Cooper, and Taylor Vastine; 9 great-grandchildren; and nephews Scott (Vicki) Fischer and Rex (Lana) Fischer. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leo after 52 years of marriage in 2003, and daughter Cynthia Smith in 2006.
