Sioux City | Mark Allen Johnson, 63, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at his home after a two year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at Sunnybrook Community Church, with Pastor B.J. Van Kalsbeek officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday with the family present 6:30-8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Mark was born in Sioux City, IA on September 8, 1950 to Bjarnie and Helen (Olson) Johnson. Mark was the fifth child of nine. He has four brothers and four sisters; Jerry, Jeanette, Dennis, Sandra, Steve, Sue, Pam, and Lori. He graduated from Central High School in 1968. Mark joined the U.S. Navy where he served from 1969 until 1975 as a Seabee,during this time he spent eight months in the Vietnam War. Returning home Mark began working at Mid-American Energy Co. in which he would work 42 years there before his retirement. His time at Mid-American Energy he held many different positions and served on the Safety and Apprenticeship committees. Mark became a family man and had three amazing children; Chad, Jodi, and Marty. He enjoyed taking his kids camping during the summer as well as going to football games and family gatherings. In the fall of 2000 while on the job during a routine service call, he met the love of his life Monica Begnoche. On July 10th of 2004 they were United in Marriage, He became the Dad to Alicia and Marisa. They shared their life together raising the girls, spending time with grandchildren, family and friends. Mark engaged in many remolding projects and the building of the family pool, they both enjoyed entertaining and held annual 4th of July parties. Mark will always be remembered for his impersonations of Donald Duck and Elvis Presley. His kids will always remember the strong whistle he had when it was time to for them to stop playing and come home. Mark had a passion for sports of all kinds. He was a competitive person by nature and enjoyed playing softball, basketball, running in the Memorial Day Bolder Boulder and bicycling, including riding in RAGBRAI. He was an avid Viking and Hawkeye fan and made sure you knew he was. He always looked forward to the weekly Guys Night Out' watching football with his life-long friends. Marks daily routine included stops to local coffee shops and picking up a breakfast burrito. He took pride in his Norwegian Heritage, was proud to be an American and was a member of the American Legion. Nothing was more important to Mark then spending quality time with family and friends. Through his battle with cancer Mark became closer to God and enjoyed listening to Christian music. Mark made sure he would pray with family and friends and help share the word of God. Mark lived his life by the words he shared from a close friend "No matter what happens I will be okay because God is with me." He will be deeply missed by all. Survivors include his wife Monica Johnson and 7 children, Chad Johnson and his wife, Nicki of Frisco, Tex, Jodi Margellos and her fiancé, Jeff Richter of Okoboji, Iowa and Marty Johnson and his significant other, Michaela Malloy of Omaha, Nebr., Jason McKenna and his wife, Stacy of Carrollton, Tex, Jared McKenna of Waxahachie, Tex, Alicia Begnoche and her significant other, Bret Michalsky of Sioux City and Marisa Begnoche of Sioux City; 7 grandchildren, Olivia Johnson, Colin and Emily Margellos, Ella Michalsky, Damian and Kimberlin McKenna, Amaya Waldrop , many nieces and nephews, his parents-in-law, Harvey and Joyce Begnoche and sister in law Pat Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandra. Pallbearers will be Brad Wilson Jody Oldenkamp,Ron Zellers,Andy Kohn,Shawn Mansfield and Michael LeVasseur. A memorial in Mark's honor will be established at a later date. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Nicole Shonka and the Medical Team at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
