Richard S. "Dick" Friesen, 68, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at his home. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the McCook Cemetery, McCook Lake, S.D. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Richard "Dick" was born in Sioux City, where he was raised and lived his whole life. Richard "Dick" graduated from Riverside High School in 1966 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served his country during the Vietnam War. After returning home from the Army, he lived in Sioux City caring for his elderly parents. He worked at Mosher's Greenhouse for many years until it was eventually acquired by Earl May Seed and Nursery. He loved to garden, growing many beautiful flowers and plants for others to enjoy, and loved to travel. He had a fascination with photography, a hobby which started during his tour of duty in the military. Richard also loved to collect stamps and toy trains, captivated by both. Richard "Dick" was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Richard was a gentle soul who was unassuming of others and always willing to help in any way he could. He will be greatly missed by both his family and the many friends who knew him well. Richard "Dick" is survived by his sister, Margaret (Friesen) Foster; his nephew, Brian Foster; niece, Ruth (Foster) Hernandez; grandnephews, Jacob Hernandez and Samuel Hernandez. Richard "Dick" was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Edith (Viola) Friesen.
