SIOUX CITY | Martha Viola (Jackson) Free, 98, of Sioux City, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Countryside Senior Living. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rev. Dan Lozer officiating. Visitation will be the hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Per Martha's wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and burial will be at a later date in Logan Park Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Martha was born Aug. 8, 1915 in Sioux City the daughter of William J. and Jennie Belle (Ross) Horner. After graduating from Central High School, Martha worked for Dikel & Tronvold Fur Shops and T.S. Martin. She worked at St. Luke's Medical Center as a technician for over 17 years and retired in 1981. On Aug. 10, 1944 she married Robert W. "Bob" Jackson at Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ. Together they raised their son, Richard D. "Rich" Jackson. Bob died Dec. 2, 1981 in Sioux City. Martha later married Francis L. "Frank" Free on Feb. 18, 1989 at Mayflower Church. Frank died June 10, 2004 in Sioux City. Her son, Rich, died in 1996. Martha was a lifelong member of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ. She belonged to the church's Pilgrim Circle and was past president of the Women's Fellowship at the church. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter KE and Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority. She was a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts for 3 years. Martha was past president of Smith School P.T.A. and West Junior P.T.A. She also served on the P.T.A. Council for 3 years. Martha enjoyed square dancing and music. She loved to bake and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Marcia Jackson of Brandon, SD; 2 grandchildren, Lisa Andersen and Robert Jackson, both of Sioux Falls; 3 great-grandchildren, Tiffany Andersen, Jessica Andersen and McKenzie Jackson; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands Bob and Frank, her son, Rich Jackson; a sister, Versa Johnson and 2 brothers, William Horner and Lawrence Horner. Memorials may be made in her name to Mayflower Congregational Church or the American Cancer Society.
