Merle E. Lang, 92 of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at the Touchstone Living Center. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with Reverend Nea Huggins officiating. Visitation will be today, Friday, June 27th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service followed by a Masonic Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Online condolences for the family may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com Merle was born on March 30, 1922 in Shenandoah, Iowa to Jesse and Anna (Purple) Lang. He was the 9th child of 11 (6 boys and 5 girls). Merle graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1941. His father died shortly after Merle graduated and he continued to take care and support his mother. He worked for the City of Sioux City in street maintenance where he drove salt trucks in the winter and also broke concrete, poured cement, and repaired city streets. Merle later went to work for Sioux Tools on the assembly line where he worked from 1954 thru 1959. In 1953, Merle met Ruth Ann Lawrence at the First Christian Church; the two were married on April 2, 1954 at the home of Ruth's parents, Ben and Gladys Lawrence. Merle worked for the Jewish Community Center before joining the crew at the Sioux City Schools, where he worked in maintenance from 1960 until his retirement in 1987. Merle belonged to several different Masonic organizations. He was a 50 year member of his Blue Lodge at Triangle Masonic Lodge, a 50 year member of the Consistory at the Scottish Rite Temple, has been a member of Abu Bekr Shrine since May of 1953, and was a member of the Eastern Star (beginning with Isis Chapter and changing to Rose Croix when Isis closed down). Merle was a loyal Minnesota Vikings fanatic, he had great passion for fishing, but he found his greatest joy in his family, all of whom he adored and loved greatly. Merle is survived by his wife Ruth Ann of Sioux City; children Patricia "Pat" Spitz of Gackle, ND, Lawrence "Larry" Lang of Independence, OR, Charles "Chuck" Lang and his wife Susie of Sioux City, Dorothy Praster and her husband Jim of North Platte, NE, and Wallace "Wally" Lang of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchilden. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, and 10 brothers and sisters.
