I. June Thilo

June 27, 1929 — June 8, 2014

I. June Thilo, 84, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City, Iowa. June was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on June 27, 1929, to Mildred (King) and Irvin Fegley. She was graduated from Central High School in 1947 and continued her education at Methodist School of Nursing where she earned her nursing degree in 1950. June was named "Student Nurse of Iowa" in 1949 and held various positions in nursing over the years. On July 18, 1951, June married the love of her life Robert C. (Bob) Thilo. They had five children and were married for 40 years until his death in 1991. June was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church, the National TTT Society, and P.E.O. She enjoyed hospital volunteering and remained active with the retired nurses program. Caring for family, friends, and residents at Sunrise Retirement Community brought her great joy. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, playing Mahjong, and making peanut brittle. One of June's greatest pleasures was baking desserts and special dishes for others. She is survived by her five children Rob and wife Mugs of Mercer Island, Washington, Tom and wife Sue of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Dan and wife Cyndi of Charlotte, North Carolina, Tim of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Nancy of Catonsville, Maryland, and June's sister Maxine Wyant of Sioux City. June was especially proud of her grandchildren Geoffrey, Alison, Evan, Sarah Brehm, Samuel, Rebecca, Dillon, Collin, Emily, Taylor, Charlie Franker, and her great grandson Henry Brehm. A memorial service will be held at Crescent Park United Methodist Church on July 2, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. The family prefers memorials be made in June's name to St. Luke's College Foundation, 2800 Pierce St., Sioux City, IA 51104, where a nursing scholarship will be established in her name. The family expresses its gratitude to the staff and residents at Sunrise Retirement Community for their generous support and friendship, and St. Luke's Regional Medical Center staff and Hospice of Siouxland for their compassionate care.
