Lorraine A. "LaRaine" Garvis, 95, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at a Sioux City nursing home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Holy Spirit Retirement Home, with the Rev. Dennis Meinen officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and vigil service at 7 p.m., in the Chapel at Holy Spirit Retirement Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. LaRaine A. Garvis was born on Aug. 8, 1918, in Jefferson S.D., the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Gary) Proulx. She was an only child. LaRaine attended grade school at country schools in the Jefferson area and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936. Following graduation, LeRaine went to work at Martin-Davis Department Store in Sioux City as a bookkeeper. LaRaine and Leonard Garvis met in high school and were married on Sept. 11, 1939, in St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson. She married the love of her life. In 1947, LaRaine and Leonard started the family business Garvis Mobil Service in Jefferson. They both took part in daily duties until the business closed in 1976. Leonard preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1999, in Sioux City one day after the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. When the couple were not working at the station, they enjoyed dancing, they took part in several square dancing clubs as well as many square dance competitions. They also enjoyed a waltz or two with each other. Following moving to Sioux City, the couple became very active with the Mercy Medical Center Pastoral Care where they became friends with many people and dear friends with Sister Marlys and Father Sitzmann. LaRaine is survived by three daughters, Coleen and her husband, Donald Hetzel of Keokuk, Iowa, Carol and her husband, Bill Bowden of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Connie and her husband, Donald Owings of Las Vegas, Nev.; one son, Gary Garvis, and his wife, Laurene, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Garvis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and several uncles and aunts in the United States and Canada. Masses may be given in her name or memorials in her name may be given to Hospice of Siouxland or the Pastoral Care at Mercy Medical Center.
