Arjes Ann Youngblade passed away on May 21, 2014 at Vintage Hills Alzheimer's Neighborhood in Ankeny. Although the disease took its toll, Arjes' humor, bright smile, and love for her family never missed a beat. Arjes was born in Sioux City on May 9, 1932 to Jessie (Speaker) and Arthur Sundquist. After Jessie's death, Art married Christine Brauer. After graduating from Central High School in 1950, Arjes attended the University of Iowa and Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls. In college she was a member of Phi Beta Phi sorority, the Hawkeye drum line, and runner-up for Miss Iowa. After graduation, Arjes moved to Ames and was the original host of WOI-TV's "The Magic Window." She continued to participate in children's programming in Sioux City. Arjes married Daniel M. Youngblade in June 1955. She was a first grade teacher in Iowa City while Dan was in medical school. After Dan's medical training, they moved back to their hometown of Sioux City where they raised six children and resided for 52 years. Arjes' talents lead her in many directions including painting, gardening, and cooking. Her award winning watercolor paintings were shown in galleries throughout the MidWest. Her passions of flowers, gardening, and animals have been passed down to her children and grandchildren. Her legacy of storytelling will live on through the "Mousey Tales" and "The Magic Carpet Rides." Arjes was a member of PEO, the Iowa State Order of the Knoll, and a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a true Cyclone fan and an avid cheerleader for her 13 grandchildren and their extra curricular activities. Arjes is survived by her brother William (Barb) Brauer of Edina, MN, her children Chris (Dan) Schmidt of Ames, Beth (Pat) McCrann of Denver, Co, Dan (Brigid) of Sioux City, Alan (Rhonda) of Centennial, CO, Mary (Kelly) Scott of Grimes, and David (Julie) of Ankeny; 13 Grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Gloria Ann Barber of Cedar Rapids, her cousin Dorothy Sundquist Soudakoff of Bloomington, IN, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
