Sioux City | Wanda M. Hamel (80) of Sioux City, Iowa, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3700 Indian Hills Drive, with the Revered Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 19th, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Wanda was born April 10, 1934, in Webb, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mildred (Hersom) Enyart. She attended school in Laurens, Iowa, and graduated from high school in 1951; attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, for one year; then graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in 1956. She lived most of her life in Sioux City and worked at Lutheran Hospital for several years. She also worked at St. Joseph Hospital and Marian Health Center, where she worked in chemical dependency and mental health until her retirement in 1996. She married John W. Hamel on January 12, 1957. She was a long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher for singing, had sung in the choir for several years, attended Wesley Fellowship Club, and was a member of the "Shades of Light" singing group for 8 1/2 years. She served on the Shesler Hall Board of Directors for 3 years; volunteered at Girls Club for 14 years; was a member of the Nurse Advisory Board, Siouxland Sampler Quilt Guild, Red Hat Society, and Leeds Card Club; and enjoyed line dancing. She loved to sing and was also interested in quilting and ceramics. She was involved in Cub Scouts and the Scouting program for several years. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, John, and her five sons and their wives: Stewart and Kathleen of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Bruce and Peggy of Sioux City, Iowa; Paul and Mary Jo of Mesquite, Texas; Anthony and Delores of Peoria, Arizona; and Thomas and Donna of Plymouth, Minnesota. Eight grandchildren: John, Bethany, Monica, Eric, Ryan, Samantha, Alexandra, Kristen, and Natasha. One step-granddaughter, Catrina, and two step-great-grandsons, Greg and Roddy. One great-granddaughter, Baylea; and one great-grandson, Cal. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sol and Marian Murad. She was a very loving person and will be missed by all.
