Gladys Irene Smith, 87, of Elk Point, SD formerly of Jefferson, SD passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at her residence in Elk Point, SD. Per her wishes, her body was cremated. There will be a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Elk Point, SD with Rev. David Bentz officiating. Burial of her cremains will be in the Elk Point City Cemetery. Visitaion without her body present will be on Friday, May 23, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com Gladys was born on July 29, 1926 to Darwin and Christine (Severson) Larson. She graduated from Vivian High School in Vivian, SD. She was united in marriage to Robert G. Smith on June 11, 1950 in Pierre, SD. He preceded her in death in October of 1969 in Slatter, MO. She worked as a housekeeper, and was a cook for the Jefferson High School and the Jefferson Café. In her younger years, Gladys loved to play softball where she played in a women's league and was very proud of her accomplishments at short stop. Later in life she enjoyed fishing, spending time with her family and having campouts with her grandchildren. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Elk Point and a member of the Jefferson Fire Fighter's Auxiliary. She is survived by her daughter Joey (Edward) Kyte of Burbank, SD; 2 grandchildren Jeremy (Bobbi Jo) Kyte of Omaha, NE; Joshua (Tiff) Kyte Yankton, SD; 5 great grandchildren Evan Nelson, Caden Kyte, Jaclyn Kyte, Camden Kyte, and Peyton Kyte; 2 sisters Josephine Drew of Minneapolis, MN; and Alice Rice of CO; and a brother Olaf Larson Vivian, SD. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers Melvin and Edwin Larson, 4 sisters Emma Smith, Laura Wilson, Clara Cooke and Alma Larson. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials to be made in Gladys name to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Elk Point, SD.
