Helen Mevius, 92 of Sioux City, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at a local hospital. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor James Travis officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be this evening, Tuesday, May 6th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service this evening at 6:30 p.m. Online condolences for the family may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com Helen was born on September 10, 1921 in New York City, New York to Frank and Irene Lekanidis. She received her education at Roosevelt School in the Bronx. Helen was proud to serve her country during World War II, enlisting in the Women's Army Corp (WACs) in August of 1943. She received numerous Medals of Honor, and received her honorable discharge as a Sergeant in November of 1945. Helen moved to Chicago, Illinois following her military career and worked for RCA where she met Ernest Mevius. The couple relocated to Sioux City in early 1948, and was married at Calvary Lutheran Church on April 10, 1948. Helen worked at Hanson Glass & Paint as a bookkeeper for years, before waitressing at both the Sioux City Country Club and the Hawkeye Club. Following her retirement, she enjoyed being a homemaker and staying active at Calvary Lutheran Church. Helen enjoyed her membership to the Ladies Aid at Calvary Lutheran Church, and was President of the Golden Age Group, an office she held until her passing on Saturday. She was very social, enjoyed meeting people, and often enjoyed "the boat". Helen is survived by her daughter Debbie Wynia and her husband Nelson of Maurice, IA; son Randy Mevius and his wife Teri of Sioux City; sister Mary Vernuccio of New York City, NY; grandchildren Robin Buckholtz and her husband Jeremy, Mick Harrison and his wife Megan, Jessica Harrison, Katlyn Wynia, and Philip Wynia and his wife Samantha; great-grandchildren Jordyn, Emily, Megan, Kenzie, and Brysten; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ernest in January of 1997, sister Madra, brother Spiro, granddaughter Brooke Harrison, and great-grandson Shane Duffy. Casket Bearers for the service will be Bruce Lahrs, Don VanRoekel, Randy Ohl, Leonard Sembach, Denny Harwood, and Mark Scott. Honorary Bearer is Frank Vernuccio.
