Kevin M. McElroy

Kevin M. McElroy, 25 of Omaha, NE and formerly of Sioux City passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014 at an Omaha, NE hospital after a yearlong battle with cancer. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City. Rev. Merlin Schrad will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha with luncheon to follow at Stephen the Martyr in Omaha. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. Thursday with a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. Thursday all at the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Kevin was born June 4, 1988 in Lincoln, NE; he was the son of Terry and Kris (Graff) McElroy. The family moved to Sioux City when Kevin was a child. He attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in 2006. Kevin received a Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology from the University of Nebraska in Omaha in 2011. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon where he served as past President. Kevin was devoted to doing multiple hours of volunteer work while going to school at UNO. Kevin married the love of his life Cortney Pietryga on June 29, 2013 in Omaha. He did cancer research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and most recently was employed as a microbiologist at Aegis Food Testing Laboratories in North Sioux City, SD. Kevin always had such a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and fraternity brothers. He also enjoyed bicycle riding and spending time with his dog, Mickey. Survivors include his wife Cortney of Omaha, his parents: Terry and Kris McElroy of Sioux City, his brother: Josh McElroy (Laura) of Sioux City, his sister: Hanna McElroy of Sioux City, maternal grandparents: J.R. and Kathy Graff of Gothenburg, NE, and a niece and nephew Jillian and Daniel McElroy, multiple Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Kevin was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Terry and Mary Helen McElroy.
