Aaron A. Null, 93, of Sioux City passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, in Sioux City. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger J. Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Aaron was born on Jan. 19, 1921, in Albaton, Iowa, the son of Thomas A. and Elizabeth Pearl (Wells) Null. The family then moved to a farm near Sloan, Iowa, from there to a farm west of Whiting, Iowa, where he attended country school through the eighth grade. The family then moved to Westfield, Iowa, where he worked and farmed until entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in June 1942. After attending basic training in Miami Beach, Fla., he was then transferred to Fort Benning, Ga., where he was assigned to the 316th Troop, 45th Squadron, 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army Air Corps, training in parachute jumping. During his service, he was in nine major World War II campaigns in central Europe, northern France, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Egypt-Libya, Naples-Foggia, Tunisia, Sicily, and Normandy, where he was a member of the 1st Allied Airborne Army. Aaron was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge with two Oak Leaf Clusters, a European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Star, and four Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged in September 1945. On Oct. 20, 1979, he married Doris Ullrich. She passed away on Feb. 25, 2000. He was a farmer and also worked as a heavy equipment operator for various companies. The most recent was with the city of Sioux City as a foreman for 17 years, retiring in 1983 after 25 years. After retiring, their travels took them to many states across the country, then wintering in Texas. After Doris passed away, Aaron continued traveling to Texas every winter until 2008. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, the V.F.W., American Legion and the Elk Club in McAllen, Texas. He is survived by a brother, Virgil Null of Centerville, S.D.; three sisters, Bonnie Monfort of Lena, Wis., Nellye (Stanley) Goodell of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Pat Hoffman of rural North Sioux City; 30 nephews and nieces; 76 grandnephews and nieces; 88 great-grandnephews and nieces; and eight great-great-grandnephews and nieces; and a few cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; two brothers, Merlin and Earl and his wife, Bobbi; three sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Earl smith, Ethel and Tom Martin, and Vivian and Hoyt McCormick; two brothers-in-law, Hank Monfort, and Clyde Hoffman; a sister-in-law, Jackie Null; two nephews, Roger Durr, and Dick Smith; two nieces, Deanna Monfort, and Janet Hoffman; and two grandnephews, Curt Hoffman, and Clinton Null.
