Martha Jeanne Sprenger, 93, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. with the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences can be directed to meyerbroschapels.com. Martha was born the daughter of Clarence and Edna (Pyle) Cook on May 18, 1920 in Gary, Indiana. She was adopted at the age of 8 months by Marvin and Louise (James) Holben after her parents divorced. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1938. Martha married Jack Phillips on June 28, 1940. Jack died in active duty in 1943. She later married Louis "Bud" Sprenger, Jr. on November 14, 1946 in Sioux City, Iowa. Bud died in 1994. Martha spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was very active in the Eastern Star in Akron and served as the Worthy Matron in 1959. She was also a member of the Union County Extension Club, the Akron Home Culture Club, and a book club. She was active in the First Baptist Church in both Akron and Sioux City. Martha enjoyed collecting post marks and post cards, reading, and genealogy. She was a very creative person who loved writing poetry, doing needle work left for her family to enjoy, scrap booking, and paper cutting. She enjoyed life and everything it had to offer. Martha is survived by three children, Louis F. (Mary) Sprenger III of Sioux City, Joann (John) Winquist of Sioux City, and Jo Sandra Jammerthal of Akron; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and her cat, Socks. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one half sister, Helen; two grandchildren, Marie Lynn and baby boy Sprenger; and one great-grandson, Ryan.
