Albert L. "Babe" Nieman, 85, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 at a local hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Scott Squires officiating. Visitation will be Monday, March 3, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. with the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. with a prayer service at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Albert was born the son of John and Gladys (Van Houten) Nieman on August 14, 1928 in Winnebago, Nebraska. He married Anna Marie Gasser on October 19, 1947 in Ponca, Nebraska. After their marriage the couple made their home in Sioux City, Iowa. Albert worked for John Deere in Sioux City and Sioux City Dressed Beef but spent most of his career working as a highly respected carpenter and house builder. Albert was a devoted husband and father, and family meant everything to him. He enjoyed fishing and camping trips with his family in Minnesota. He was an avid gardener and raised sweet corn that was in high demand by family, friends and neighbors. He and his wife enjoyed traveling & sightseeing during their retirement years. Albert is survived by his wife, Anna Marie of Sioux City; one son, Doug (Sandy) Nieman of LeMars, Iowa; one daughter, Cheryl (Kevin) Hurlbert of Sioux City, Iowa; three brothers, Elmer and Mearle, both of Winnebago, and Chester Nieman of Dakota City; two sisters, Beverly Harris of Sioux City, and Bernice Gesch of Amarillo, Texas; a cousin, Roland (Marie) Matthews of Winnebago; seven grandchildren, Sheli, Dawn, Kimberly, Trisha, Heather, Kristopher, and Krystal; and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, one in infancy and Marvin.
