Sioux City / Gary D. Rose, 78, of Sioux City, Iowa, died peacefully Monday, February 17, 2014, at his home after a brief illness. Services will be at 11:00 Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Rev. B. J. Van Kelsbeek of the Sunnybrook Community Church will officiate. Burial will be at 11:30 Saturday at Graceland Cemetery with military rights. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 Thursday with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00, and a prayer service at 7:00 with Masonic Rites to follow at the funeral home. Gary was born June 22, 1935 in Coleridge, Nebraska, the son of Albert and Lulu (Dowling) Rose. He was a 1953 graduate of Rosalie, Nebraska high school. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1955 through April of 1958. He worked for Roberts Dairy for 13 years and retired from Wells Dairy in 1998 after 20 years of service. He was united in marriage to Caryl R. Hrdy on August 7, 1956, in Walthill, Nebraska. Gary was an avid sports fan. He was a huge Nebraska fan and could be found in front of his TV with his bowl of popcorn whenever they played. He followed East High School and Morningside College sports diligently, as well as his New York Yankees. He coached baseball for 15 years for the Elks Club, Jackson Pump and Wendy's, was the head umpire at Pulaski Park for approximately 10 years, umpired baseball games at all levels including little league, senior little league, high school, especially at Lawton-Bronson, and college. In 1997 he was presented a plaque in recognition and appreciation of his dedicated service to the Iowa High School Athletic Association and its member schools for 15 years as an active official. He refereed recreational basketball and coached youth football winning the City championship in 1981. He was proud to have coached a number of young men who were a part of the East High School football team who won the Iowa State football championship in 1984. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. He was a member of Olive Branch Lodge #274 in Walthill, Nebraska, and Morningside Lodge #615 in Sioux City, as well as the Sioux City Consistory. Survivors include his wife, Caryl, of 57 years, 3 children, Lori Moss (Paul) of Springdale, Arkansas, Julie Burger (Dave) of Sioux City, Iowa, and Dan Rose (Denise) of South Sioux City, Nebraska; 7 grandchildren, Jon, Jennifer, Erin, Andrew, Nathan, Erika and Mitchell, and 6 great-grandchildren, Evan, Landon, Grace, Addilyn, Alexis and Mikayla; and 3 siblings, Don Rose (Becky) of Omaha, Nebraska, Neil Rose (Dianne) of Olathe, Kansas and Dianne Rico (Bruce) of Lincoln, Nebraska and nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law Les and Ruth Hrdy, and a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and MaryAnn Hrdy.
