SIOUX CITY | Richard Stevens Hoak, 97, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of cremation. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Dick was born January 26, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa to Irma Stevens Hoak and Percy E. Hoak. Even as a young boy, Dick loved all sports. He won the Iowa state marbles championship when he was 12. He played basketball, ran track and soon discovered his life long passion for golf. While attending the University of Iowa he was captain of the golf team, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Maxine Asher. They were later married on September 7, 1940. Dick went on to become a founding member and promoter of the Iowa Golf Association. He also promoted all amateur golf tournaments in Iowa while he himself played in 2 national amateur tournaments, 1 in 1954, which Arnold Palmer won, and another in 1956. Later he served on the board of directors of the Trans Mississippi Golf Association for 8 years. Dick's business career started in Des Moines as a dynamite salesman and shortly after he moved to Sioux City where he established Dixon-Hoak Motors in August of 1945 selling Dodge and Plymouths. Eventually he bought the Oldsmobile franchise in 1954 and Cadillac in 1964. Over the years he acquired many more auto franchises, establishing Hoak Motors as a staple in the community. He retired in 1979 selling his business to his son Rick Hoak and son-in-law, Chuck Wood. Always a generous and compassionate man, Dick was a great supporter of the community, he served on Toy National Bank's and St Joseph Hospital's boards for many years. He was active and involved with many other civic organizations as well. He was president of the Sioux City Country Club and was club champion in 1957, 57, 60, 61 and 63. He always had a warm smile, a word of advice and a kind heart for everyone he met. Survivors include his 3 daughters; Cynthia Hoak of Litchfield Park ,Az; Susan Wood and her husband Chuck of Punta Gorda, Fl; Becky Hood and her husband Jack of St. Louis, Mo; a son Rick Hoak and his wife Judy of Sioux City; 2 brothers, Jim Hoak of Palm Beach, Fl. and Tom Hoak of Delray Beach, Fl,; and a sister Virginia Beal of Omaha, Ne. He also has 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his one true love, his wife Maxine, his parents and a sister Florence Frowick. Memorials may be sent to First Congregational Church in Sioux City or the Goodfellow Organization of the Sioux City Journal. .
