NEWCASTLE, Neb. | Eugene F. "Gene" Day, 51, of Newcastle died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Yankton Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Andrew Sohm officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Newcastle. Visitation with the family will begin at 5 p.m. today, with a parish wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Gene was born Sept. 11, 1962, in Sioux City, the son of Paul Matthew and Bernadette Ann (Shanahan) Day. He grew up on the family farm near Newcastle and graduated from Newcastle High School. Gene made agriculture his career. Since 2003 he had partnered in farming with Mitch Lewon. On Aug. 28, 1993, he married Susan M. Pfister in Newcastle. To that union two children were born, Connor and Kaci. Gene was a great husband, father and friend. He loved to coach not only his own kids but all kids. He was an avid Husker fan and could be found among the sea of red in Lincoln with his family and friends on game day. Gene was also an outdoor enthusiast who spent many weekends in the summer boating and camping with his family and friends. Gene was a very active and proud member of the community who was there for anyone in need. Among all of these other activities, Gene still found time to serve his community on the Newcastle School Board, Silver Creek Township and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Susie Day; a son, Connor and a daughter Kaci, both at home; two sisters, Peggy Gregg and her husband, Mark and Bonnie Bevelhymer, all of Ponca, Neb.; mother, Bernadette Day of Newcastle; mother-in-law, Mary Lou Pfister of Newcastle; brother-in-law, Scott Pfister and his wife, Joann of Portland, Ore.; extended family, Mitch Lewon and his wife, Brooke; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Day; two brothers, Larry Day and Roger Day; his father-in-law, Louis Pfister; and two brothers-in-law, Kevin McGill and Steve Bevelhymer. Pallbearers will be his nephews, John Gregg, Jess Prewitt, Matt Dendinger, Eric Bevelhymer, Chris Bevelhymer, Luke McGill, Justin Wentzel and Andy Millard.
