Carol Jean Swanson

Carol Jean Swanson, 71, of Sioux City passed away Friday, January 17, 2014 at a local hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 20, 2014 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with Reverend Tim Bonney officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Carol was born December 23, 1942 in Sioux City the daughter of Dean and Evelyn (Fish) Baker. She graduated from East High School and attended Wayne State College and Morningside College. She married Douglas Swanson on February 15, 1964 in Sioux City. Carol was very active and enjoyed softball, tennis, and bowling and loved coaching her son's T-ball teams. She was very good at arts and crafts and enjoyed knitting, making stained glass windows, and decorating for friends and family's weddings. Carol also acted as general contractor for three of the family's houses that were built. She was an active member of the Red Hats Society, Fishettes, and the Whispering Creek Country Club. Carol also was a 71 year member of Grace United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband Douglas Swanson of Sioux City; sons: Stan and wife Lisa Swanson of Glendale, AZ, Steve and his significant other Marlene Smith of Sioux City, and Scott and wife Nancy of Phoenix, AZ; Grandchildren: Paxton, Lexis, Andrew, Lauren, Sydney, Noah, and Kristian; soon to be great grandson Owen; brother Doug Baker of Tucson, AZ; nephews: Guy and Ben Baker; cousin David Baker; and special friend Virginia Pruehs. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister in law Betty Baker. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Carol's name to Grace United Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank the nurses on the 5th and 6th floor of Mercy Medical Center for their wonderful care of Carol in this difficult time.
