Ethel L. Bauer, 81, of North Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City and Pierson, Iowa went to be with her beloved husband, Fran, on Sunday, January 12, 2014. Her passing was peaceful. Memorial Services will be 1 P.M. Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. with family present 6 to 8 P.M. and a Vigil service at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Online condolences can be directed to meyerbroschapels.com. Ethel L. Johnson was born on November 5, 1932 in Yankton, SD to LeRoy and S. Margaret (Griener) Johnson. Ethel attended school in Yankton and graduated from Mapleton High in 1950. She continued her education at St Joseph School of Nursing and after 2 years of nurses training left to pursue her degree as MOM. She married Francis B. Bauer on May 19, 1952. To this union were born 10 children. During the early years of their marriage she helped run Bauer's Market on 15th and Geneva in Sioux City. After raising her children she worked with special needs children and then retired from Mercy Medical Center 17 years ago. At that time she and Fran moved to Pierson, Iowa where they were active in the Towne and Country she especially enjoyed helping run the concession stand and the haunted house. She had a great since of humor, enjoyed crafts, reading and spending time with her family. Ethel was a 40 year breast cancer survivor. Due to declining health they moved to North Sioux City to be closer to their children and healthcare in 2012. Ethel is survived by her children, Chris of Sioux City, IA, Mary of Cherokee, IA, Larry (Dee) of North Sioux City, SD, Mark (Connie) of Sioux City, Ken (Kim) of Correctionville, IA, Gary of Kingsley, IA, Todd (Penny) of Littleton, IL, Bill (Samantha) of Salix, IA, and Gina of Brandon, SD; 38 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, her beloved brothers and their spouses, Jimmie O. and Colleen Johnson of Clarion, IA, Thomas "Pete" (Meg) Johnson of Amana, IA, a sister in law Margaret (Frank) Johnson of Fort Dodge, IA and sister-in-law Dee (Bauer) and Vince Havorka of Sidney, NE as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years on April 2, 2013, a loss of which she never fully recovered, her parents, brothers Frank, Bill and Todd, sisters Mary Inez, Dee and Peggy, daughter Beatrice and granddaughter Wendy.
