Donald E. Hindman

March 9, 1932 — January 4, 2014

Donald E. Hindman, 81 of Sioux City passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at a local care facility. Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Merlin Schrad will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Thursday with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. and a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Donald was born March 9, 1932 in Sioux City; he was the son of Charles and Helen (Meeks) Hindman. Don graduated from Central High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 -1953. Don married Phyllis A. Newman Aug. 3, 1957 in Sioux City. She passed away Aug. 14, 2010 in Sioux City. Don was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He worked in the optical business making eye glasses before retiring. He was employed by Duling Optical, Walman Optical and Pech Optical. Don is a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is also a member of the American Legion. One of Don's great loves was Heelan High School. He attended Heelan events for years, often as the first one in line after arriving hours early "to get a good seat". Even in the midst of his dementia, one of the few things he could remember was "Heelan". In honor of Don's love for Heelan, he will be buried wearing a Heelan sweatshirt. Survivors include a son: Scott Hindman and his wife Jeanne of Sioux City; a daughter in law: Mary Ann Hindman of Anamosa, IA; eight grandchildren: Stephanie May and her husband Tony of Las Vegas, NV and a great granddaughter, Carolyn May and a great grandson, Henry May; Lucas Hindman and his wife Megan of East Moline, IL; Zachary Hindman and his wife Lindsay and great grandsons, David Hindman and Michael Hindman of Sioux City; Rebecca Wagner and her husband Tim of Storm Lake, IA; Sarah Hindman of Lincoln, NE and her fiancé Nathan Clark; Joshua Hindman and his wife Carissa of Iowa City, IA; Joseph Hindman and Jacob Hindman of Sioux City; 2 sisters: Kathryn Paul of Sioux City and Barb Simet of Omaha, NE and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis, a son: Steve, a brother: Milton, a sister: Margaret Kersey and several nieces and nephews Pallbearers will be Scott, Zachary, Lucas and Jacob Hindman, Rick Simet and Larry Miller Memorials may be directed to Bishop Heelan High School.
