Thomas E. Gates, 60, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at his residence, following a courageous battle with cancer. A celebration of life will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Thomas was born Sept. 4, 1953, in Sioux City, the son of Jim and Frances (Engstrom) Gates. He attended school in Sioux City, graduating from Heelan High School. He was united in marriage to Jeanne Gates on Dec. 12, 1992. Tom was employed at Alliance GCC as a cement truck driver at the time of his death. He had previously worked for many years at Standard Ready Mix. Tom enjoyed playing pool and being a member of pool teams, fishing, golfing and playing cards, along with the company of many friends and relatives. Tom is survived by his son, Jacob T. Gates; special friend and caregiver, Jeanne Gates; his brothers and sisters, Pat (Cheryl) Gates, Mickey (Mel) Trudeau, Paul Gates, Bob (Angie) Gates, Jerry (Sandy) Gates, Joe Gates, Dan (LeeAnn) Gates, Mary Gates Schur, John Gates and Judy (Bryan) Mills. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Frances Gates; and his brother, Jim Gates. Condolences may be sent to his son, Jacob.
