Bert Sappingfield, 87, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Whitfield United Methodist Church with Reverend Kris Frank officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. with the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. with a prayer service at 7 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Bert was born the son of Bert and Iva (Peterson) Sappingfield on June 13, 1926 in Rosalie, Nebraska. He grew up in rural Lyons, Nebraska until moving to South Sioux City, Nebraska at age 16. Bert lived in Washington from 1969 to 1980 when he returned to Sioux City where he spent the remainder of his life. He married Donna Stansbery Keairns on January 15, 1982. He previously had been married to Margaret "Pat" Donovan. Bert started working for Armour and Company at age 18. He worked for a paper company and also for a fish company during his time in Washington. He moved back to Sioux City to work for John Morrell where he worked until his retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed working for Pioneer Bank in the parking lot. Bert enjoyed playing cards, watching WWE wrestling, traveling with his wife, and repairing bicycles. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church for over 25 years. Bert is survived by his wife, Donna Sappingfield of Sioux City; three sons, Craig Sappingfield, Tadd (Renee) Sappingfield, and Troy (Roxanne) Sappingfield all of Washington; one daughter, Connie (Bob) Benjamin of Washington; one step-son, Jimmy (Kathy) Keairns of Littleton, Colorado; one step-daughter, Colleen (Dale) Mackling of Dakota City, Nebraska; four brothers, Don Sappingfield of Sioux City, Iowa, Eldon Sappingfield of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Carol (Corinne) Sappingfield of Gothenburg, Nebraska, and Bill (Pat) Sappingfield of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister, Elaine (Bob) Pedersen of South Sioux City, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren, Shane, Paul, Malisa (Steve), Gloria (Anderson), Moriah (Matt), Jessica, Alixandrea, Jeramiah, Sandra, Melissa (Kyle), Matt (Jen), Jenny (Mike), Allison, Nick (Amanda), 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Duane (Joyce) Stansbery of Oxnard, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sister-in laws - Laurane, Dorothy and Wilma.
