Fern D. (Bretthauer) Ohl, 86, of Hinton passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at a Sioux City hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. James Travis officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, November 29, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. with family present and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Fern was born on August 31, 1927 in Ute, Iowa to John and Marie (Neddermeyer) Bretthauer. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Ute. She graduated from Ute High School and attended Business College in Omaha, NE for 2 years. When she finished business school, she worked for a bank in Dennison. Ferris first saw Fern at a dance hall in Ute, even though they never spoke that night, Ferris knew he had seen the love of his life. After a few years of dating they were united in marriage on September 12, 1948 in Ute, Iowa. Together they farmed for 7 years near Ute, where 3 of their 4 children were born. They later moved in 1955 to a farm near Hinton where their 4th child was born. Once their children were raised, Fern became a real estate agent at the age of 60. She was a past member of CRS and GRI real estate boards, achieving many awards and acknowledgements for various agencies for 16 years, retiring with Hirsch Reality. Fern enjoyed painting scenery, playing piano by ear, card games with friends, and she was a wonderfully talented cook. She enjoyed family gatherings and loved her grandchildren and great- grandchildren very much. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church where she was in the Lamplighter Auxiliary for 57 years, Lutheran Services Auxiliary and Calvary Women's League. Fern had a deep passion for her faith and made sure that her family knew the Lord. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ferris Ohl of Hinton, IA; son Randall (Cindy) Ohl of Sioux City; daughter Candice Kay (Tom) Flaherty of Bozeman, MT; son Steven F. Ohl of Sioux City; and Ryan J. Ohl and special friend Janell of Hinton; grandchildren Carrie (Eric); Corlie and friend Lawrence; Douglas and fiancée Keri; Traci (Darren); Tori; Kyler and friend Kellie; Taryn (Ryan); Tyler; Ashley; Dylan; Alli; Natalie; step grandchildren Katelyn and Jaclyn; great grandchildren Collen, Colbie; Branson; Barrett and Brett; and a sister Donna Watke of Ute, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Warren and a sister Gloria.
