George M. Nelson Sr., 59 of Sheldon, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at his residence. Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City with Reverend R. Paul Johnston officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel has assisted the family with arrangements. George was born on November 22, 1953 in Sioux City to Willie and Maryann (Williams) Nelson Sr. He received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Sioux City before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1972. Following his honorable discharge, George returned to the Sioux City area where he enjoyed his career as an over-the-road truck driver until health issues forced his retirement in 1999. He enjoyed collecting M&M collectibles, antiquing with his wife Linda, Hot Dog Days in Shelden, Iowa, fishing, video games, and spending time with his grandchildren. George was proud to be a retired Marine, and was very proud of his grandson Danny, who followed in his footsteps to become a Marine. George is survived by his wife Linda of Sheldon, Iowa; children Terri Scofield of Maridian, ID, Kevin Ross of Danbury, CT, Heather Nelson Wright of Georgetown, TX, David Ross of Seattle, WA, George Nelson Jr. of Sioux City, Cheryl Barcelou, Kassandra Rains, and James Kyle; 20 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and sisters Patsy Nelson Maaske, Paula Walsh, Maggie Nelson Lange. George was preceded in death by his parents, brother Willie George Nelson Jr., and daughter Billie Raye Barcelou.
