Susan Jane Smid, 58, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2013, at her residence. Memorial Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Pastor James Thomas officiating. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Susan was born on April 21, 1955, to Stanley and Iola (Sampson) Thompson and grew up on the farm near Remsen, Iowa. She graduated from Remsen Union High School in 1975 and continued her education at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, earning her Bachelor Degree in Music. She was previously married to Terry VanderMolen. Ryan and Nathan VanderMolen were born to this union. In 2001, she married Stephen Smid, where they remained happily married at their Sioux City residence. Susan was a music teacher for many years, teaching in both rural and urban school districts. She has taught music for the Sioux City Community School District for the last 16 years, with her most recent assignment at Liberty Elementary. She impacted numerous lives and was committed to helping children. She loved spending time with her loving husband, family, and dog "Molly." Susan enjoyed being around the water, boating, camping, and anything related to the outdoors. She also excelled in gardening, cooking, and singing. She is survived by her two sons, Ryan VanderMolen and fiancé Shalan Robertson of Sioux City, Iowa, and Nathan and Brittni VanderMolen of Anthon, Iowa; mother, Iola Thompson of Kingsley, Iowa; brothers Barry (Janice) Thompson of Kingsley, Iowa, and Tommy (Mary) Thompson of LeMars, Iowa; and three grandchildren, Keyan, Brooklyn, and Brody. She is preceeded in death by her father, Stanley Thompson.
