Wayne David Peterson, 70, of Sioux City, passed away after a battle with cancer on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 6, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. with the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. with Masonic and prayer services at 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences can be directed to meyerbroschapels.com. Wayne was born October 30, 1942 in Cherokee, IA, the son of David and Violet (Johanson) Peterson. Wayne graduated from Rembrandt Consolidated School in Rembrandt, IA. He graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA in 1964 with a degree in Business Management. He joined the U.S. Army from 1964-1966 and was stationed in Ft. Carson, CO and Inchon, Korea. On December 12th, 1964 Wayne married Nancy (Galusha) Peterson in Sioux City, IA. They were blessed with two boys, Jeff and Joel. Wayne was Director of Marketing for Three Rivers Benefit Company and worked at Postal Finance Company and Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company prior to that. Wayne was active with youth sports with his two boys and spent 25 years officiating high school and college football, basketball and baseball. Wayne was active with the Siouxland Y his entire life and in 1992 found his calling by becoming a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Abu Bekr Shrine. During that time he volunteered in the Clown Unit, Royal Order of Jesters, Iowa Shrine Bowl, Hospital Dads, Ritualistic Team, Potentate's Aide and Chief Aide, Cornhuskers, the White Horse Patrol and many other units. He always had a smile on his face and knew his work was benefiting the children that received services from the Shrine Hospitals around the country. He served as Potentate of the Abu Bekr Shrine in 2010. He served as Chaplin for the American Legion Post 662 in Sgt. Bluff, IA. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the choir and served as an Elder and Deacon. Wayne is survived by his wife Nancy of 48 years; two sons, Jeff Peterson of Ankeny, IA and Joel (Tammie) Peterson of Sioux City, IA; five grandchildren, Kaitlin (Shawn) Noyes of Ft. Worth, TX, Taylor and Conner Peterson of Ankeny, IA, and Jordan and Dylan Peterson of Sioux City, IA; two brothers, Ron (Ann) Peterson of Sioux City, IA and Virgil (Gretchen) Peterson of Dunlap, IA; one sister, Ann (Denny) Youngquist of Kiron, IA; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Hansen of Lake Havaseau, AZ and Carolyn Cabney of Alta Monte Springs, FL and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Violet Peterson; in-laws Charles and Mary Galusha; and one granddaughter, Hope Kathryn Peterson. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and the Abu Bekr White Horse Mounted Patrol will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorials be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Abu Bekr Shrine, or Abu Bekr White Horse Mounted Patrol all in Sioux City, IA.
