Dorothy M. Rooney

SIOUX CITY | Dorothy M. Rooney, 85 of Sioux City, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Touchstone Living Center after a brief illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2013 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with her son, Rev. Bill Rooney, O.F.M. and Rev. Michael Erpelding as concelebrants. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday with the family present 6-8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be made online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Dorothy was born September 8, 1927 in Tracy, Minnesota the daughter of Emmett M. and Christine (Peters) McMahon. She grew up in Manilla, Iowa where she graduated from high school. Dorothy moved to Sioux City and worked at Zuparn-Hughes Drugstore at the corner of 4th and Pearl Sts. On November 3 1949, she married William T. "Bill" Rooney at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla, Iowa. He died November 11, 1969 in Sioux City. Several years later she began working as a waitress at the Elks Club and retired from the Elbon Club. Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Boniface Church where she belonged to the Altar Society and Mission Club and also volunteered at their salad luncheons. She enjoyed bowling and golfing, especially with the Wednesday par 3 golf league which was followed by Wednesday afternoon Book Club. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include her 6 children, Mike Rooney and his wife, Trudy of Sioux City, Father Bill Rooney, O.F.M. of Cleveland, Ohio, Kathy Thomas of Angola, Indiana, Mary Thomas of Sioux City, Jane Schroeder and her husband, Dave of Sioux City and Lori Gross and her husband, DeWayne of Sheldon, Iowa; 14 grandchildren (and spouses), Kelly (Dave), Matt (Bri), Billy, Jenny, Kristen (Shawn), Maggie, Sarah (Ryan), Ben (Kelly), Katie (Chris), Anna (Mike), Sam, David (Jamie), Joe (Megan) and Martha (Kevin); 14 great-grandchildren and two on the way. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Patricia McMahon of Manilla, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, an infant son, Joseph and 5 siblings, Bernice Mose, Gerald "Jiggs" McMahon, Madonna Schwieso, Marvel Tripp and Russell McMahon. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
