Kenwood F. Cleveland, 96 of Sioux City, died on Wednesday, May 22, at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a two-month illness. Services will be held at Hetland, South Dakota at a later date. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mr. Cleveland was born on February 25, 1917 in Hetland, the son of Robert and Ethyl (Freeman) Cleveland. He grew up in Hetland and graduated from Hetland High School in 1935. He married his high school sweetheart, Margie Greathouse on October 4, 1941 in Hetland. She died on January 8, 2002 in Sioux City. Kenwood served in the U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence (CIC) in Europe during World War II and completed his B.S. degree in Education at Dakota State University (General Beadle), Madison, SD. He was also the first American Legion Commander in Hetland. With 42 years as a teacher in Bruce, Hetland, Watertown, all in South Dakota, and San Diego, California, Kenwood was most proud of his algebra students in Watertown, who won first place for ten straight years in the annual South Dakota Mathematics contest at Northern State College, Aberdeen. He retired in 1979 in San Diego and the couple moved to Sioux City in 1990. Kenwood enjoyed playing cards, playing golf, playing baseball/softball, and playing the piano. Survivors include two daughters, Marly (David) Van Berkum of Sioux City, and Barbara (Greg) Joiner of San Jacinto, CA; one son, Kenwood James of Niland CA and Days Creek, OR; one sister Beverly Dahl of Santee, CA; two sisters-in-law Camille Boyd and Sue Boyd of La Mesa, CA; grandchildren Brian, Kristin, Summer, Lindsay, Shannon, and Ashley; great-grandchildren Shelbee, Aubree, Trey, Bryce, and Amelia. Kenwood was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Monica Cleveland; brothers Don Boyd and Dean Boyd, and brother-in-law Lloyd Dahl.
