James L. Bartels

James L. Bartels, 81 of Sioux City, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2013 at his residence, comforted by family. Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place, and services will be held at a later date. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel has assisted with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com James was born on July 6, 1931 in Sioux City to Floyd and Gretchen (Churchill) Bartels. James married Shirley Nickols on August 16, 1951 in Fremont, Nebraska. He was a devoted husband and father to his family. James worked at various jobs in Sioux City before landing his favorite job at SueBee Honey as a plant security and other assigned duties. He worked there from January of 1987 to March of 2012, retiring after 25 years at age 80, due to illness. James enjoyed flying, although not a pilot, he would marvel at the view from above, and each time was like his first. He flew to California many times to see his daughter Jeri Ann and loved flying with his boss Denny at SueBee Honey. James loved to drink coffee at Johnnie Mars and the Garden Café, along with playing the slots at WinneVegas Casino. James is survived by his wife Shirley of Sioux City; daughter Jeri Ann Bartels of Elk Grove, CA; daughter Renee McNaughton and her husband Denny of Sioux City; son Rick A. Bartels of Sioux City; brother-in-law Phil Nickols and his wife Rita of Thornton, CO; grandchildren Shane McNaughton and Amanda Rose; several great-grandchildren; and his dog Cokeco. James was preceded in death by his parents.
